# About Myth Marsh

Free tools for students, readers, writers and game masters curious about Greek, Roman and Norse myth.

## What it is

Myth Marsh has six tools: a Greek gods family tree, a god finder for Greek, Roman and Norse gods, a Greek and Roman name converter, an interactive map of the Norse worlds around Yggdrasil, the gods behind the weekday and month names, and an Odyssey episode guide with a reading checklist.

## How it handles the sources

Myths were told in many versions, and the ancient writers often disagree. Rather than pick one, the site shows each version with the passage it comes from: book and line for Homer, lines for Hesiod, section numbers for Apollodorus, stanza and chapter numbers for the Eddas. The links open free translations at the Perseus Digital Library (Tufts University) and on Wikisource, so you can read the lines yourself. Where a claim rests on a modern reference work, such as the Online Etymology Dictionary for word histories or Encyclopaedia Britannica for Etruscan names, that is cited instead. Quotations are kept short and come from public-domain translations.

The site leaves things out rather than give them without a source. If you are used to a particular version of a story, it may come from a later writer, from art rather than text, or from a modern retelling.

## How it works

Everything runs in your browser. The data is part of the page, so the tools work offline once a page has loaded, and nothing you type or tick is sent anywhere. The Odyssey checklist and your light or dark theme choice are kept in your browser's local storage. The site uses Cloudflare Web Analytics, which counts page views without cookies and never receives what you type into the tools; the [privacy page](https://mythmarsh.me/privacy/) has the details.

Myth Marsh is an independent hobby site. It is not affiliated with Perseus, Wikisource, Tufts University or any publisher.
